As a manager, do you keep promises to your staff?

Scripture: It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay (Ecclesiastes 5:5).

Today’s Thought: In our efforts to motivates our employees, we may be tempted to make promises we can’t necessarily keep. For example, we may dangle the carrot of a possible raise in front of our employees to try to increase productivity. But if we need our own boss’s approval before adjusting someone’s salary, we are setting ourselves up for a fall. Having to pull back from a promise may devastate morale and undercut our leadership.

Be careful not to make commitments outside of your authority. If your decisions require

final approval from your boss, don’t act like it’s your call. And don’t talk to your staff about

promotions and raises until you have complete agreement and approval from your own superiors.

If you only make promises you know you can keep, all will appreciate your honesty

and integrity.

Discretion will guard you, understanding will watch over you (Proverbs 2:11).

Be careful not to make commitments outside of your authority.
