Do you listen to your employees’ suggestions, or does every idea have to be yours?

Scripture: Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counsellors they succeed (Proverbs 15:22).

Today’s Thought: Often we ask our staff for ideas and feedback about business operations, but we don’t really listen to their answers. By failing to hear others, we may miss many valuable suggestions. Consider using a suggestion system and granting both cash and noncash rewards for practical ideas you are able to implement.

Asking is only part of the process. It is important to create a receptive environment that encourage candid, honest responses. Don’t rebuke someone for a critical or challenging comment. Be thankful employees are willing to speak up, and allow them to fully express their viewpoint without risk of censure.

Don’t overlook quiet employees. Ask them for feedback, draw them out, and wait for their answers. An open and honest feedback process will provide your business with the benefit of wise counsel and will enhance your business decisions.

Listen to counsel and accept discipline, that you may be wise the rest of your days (Proverbs 19:20).

Create a receptive environment that encourages candid, honest responses.
