Anchor 1

Have you slackened your efforts at work, believing that God will take care of everything?

Scripture: Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them (Matthew 6:26).

Today’s Thought: When we contemplate God’s promises to meet our needs, we must be careful not to confuse his admonitions about worry with our responsibility to work diligently. Consider what Jesus says about the birds of the air in Matthew 6. Just because the sparrow doesn’t concern itself with sowing, reaping, and gathering doesn’t mean it doesn’t work hard for its food. Birds don’t sit around on fenceposts waiting for seeds to fall into their mouths. Instead, they fly hither and yon, looking for insects, worms, and berries. And out of the bounty of the earth, the Lord supplies their needs.

In like fashion, our heavenly Father gives fruit to our labors and provides a bountiful harvest of good things. Our responsibility is to seek first his righteousness, commit our plans to his purposes, and work diligently at what he gives us to do. As we’re faithful to do our part, God promises to bless our efforts.

Have long will you lie down, O slugged? (Proverbs 6:9).
